Voices from the Pacific WarThrough firsthand accounts and recordings the listener is transported back in time to the Pacific during World War 2.
It was Sunday December 7, 1941 when normal radio programs were interrupted to announce the news that the Japanese were attacking Pearl Harbor. Updates from Hawaii were few that Sunday as the enemy air attacks continued. "Stateside" broadcasters scrambled for first-hand information and military analysts speculated as news from Hawaii trickled in. One of the earliest reports to be broadcast was from KTU in Honolulu from a rooftop overlooking Pearl Harbor. Though the full extent of the damage to the Pacific Fleet was unknown at the time, the report represented a snapshot of what was understood of the situation during those early hours.
An outraged nation responded quickly. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered one of the most stirring calls to action in American history referring to December 7, 1941 as a "date which will live in infamy". FDR’s eloquent address was immediately followed by a vote by Congress in support of the Presidents request for a Declaration of War.
There were many acts of heroism to follow during the War in the Pacific. Some like the Doolittle Raid, did very little physical damage and were intended to be more psychological in nature. Others like the work of the Codebreakers, was largely behind the scenes but of incalculable importance to the war effort. Australian allies shed blood with Americans and slowed the Japanese advance at the Battle of Buna. Other Australians observed and reported enemy movements while hiding on Japanese occupied islands. It was the work of these Coast Watchers that Admiral Halsey said saved the Pacific for the allies.
The doomed Navy fliers from Torpedo Squadron 8 at Midway, the U.S. Marines at Tarawa and Iwo Jima and the heroic American Indian Marine Code Talkers are but a few of the many examples where supreme sacrifice and selflessness won the day against terrible odds.
