 Captain William Clark Action FigureLieutenant William Clark was a military man. Before accepting the assignment of co-commander of the Corps of Discovery, he had served as a Lieutenant of the Infantry. He was comfortable with the military lifestyle of the frontier and cognizant of the dangers and hardships it could present. Being of strong mind and body at age 33, he was a good choice for co-commanding the expedition to discover the famed Northwest Passage, a water route to the Pacific Ocean.
His official rank was Lieutenant of the Artillery, the only commision available at the time. However, the members of the Corps only knew him as Captain and co-leader. Clark was also well versed in astronomy and map-making.
Three years after leaving, Clark and the Corps reached St. Louis in September of 1806 after traveling a total of 8,000 miles.
Following the success of the expedition, Clark became the governor of the Missouri territory and then went on to serve as Superintendent of Indian Affairs until shortly before his death in 1838.
